The mission of this four-man 'pataljoona' (battalion) is to make the stylistic walls come tumbling down. 'Gendre music is factual music with all the pieces safely in their right places. I want to get rid of anything smacking of jazz pure and simple. These pieces draw on the subconscious, other worlds, a whiff of something we try to pinpoint by musical means', says Jani Malmi.
And the means are nothing to be scoffed at: the group has experience of dozens of leading Finnish bands since the 80's.
No more of the 'same old scheme plus solos' of gendre jazz. Free rein from the very first bars to the last note. The 'battalion' turns off the highway to explore fresh new lands right off the beaten track.
Jani Malmi is one of the most stylish guitarists in Finnish jazz... looking discretely for an expression beside the typical in jazz... 'pataljoona' is, so far, the most radical, and perhaps the most interesting change (in his style). The trio has received an addition from Yrjänä Sauros [harmonica], a well known, and original humourist. And the musical 'gendre' has become almost unpredictable. Malmi's compositions are now journeys into imaginary, or real, worlds with differing styles. The feelings change from heavier, but well controlled and economic squeezes to a dream-like beat, or even to very melodic and sensitive harmonies.

The guitar signals must have passed through several processors, but, the difference, compared to some 'effect-ridden enthusiasts', arises from Malmi's skill to master his machines - let it be called a sense of style.
This record offers challenges to those who want them, and easy 'stream-of-consciousness' to those who enjoy such. ...(this music) might alter your opinion about Finnish modern jazz.

One Leg Duck... is actually Jani´s return to roots ... modern jazz where a tight comp is topped by the guitarist´s own energetic, swinging, and yet extremely melodic playing. ...Most of the tracks are Jani´s compositions, One Leg Duck and the fine Fallen Time being the most memorable ones. The tracks composed by others are a pretty colorful bunch. [Love Potion Nr.9, Miller´s Chattanooga Choo Choo, Zappa´s Theme From Lumpy Gravy...] Offhand you would think they have nothing in common, but in the trio´s hands they´ve received a unique and pure treatment. ...this record is simply good!

A guitar record to a very great degree - though it may deceive you to hear otherwise.
Now Jani Malmi has gone forward logically, not towards boundless boisterousness, but an even inner expression by making a personal and peacefully depicting record totally by himself with the machines. Malmi´s way of painting with sound colors is decidedly suited for recording - rich, jazzy minimalism, and emotionally intimate.
