The world of wine is either very predictable (if you learn it by the book) - or just a marvellous place to make your own findings.
I admit having something that someone might consider a handicap because I resent, or to put it less provocatively, I don't favor any systematic or literary studying of wine. It tends to give seed and nourishment to wine snobbery more often than not. When I learn something about wine, my mouth, my nose, and my feelings must be involved. I believe in a sensual relationship with wine. After that I may read a line or two to learn some facts, or to find out how other people have experienced the substance I've just experienced - but that may take some time, or happen quite accidentally.
If the findings no longer make me awake, I have a feeling that I have lost my personal touch with wine.
That is why , though it may seem trivial to someone who has been there before, my personal finding of Pinot Noir in a heap, pile, or just stacks of fruit, backbone and even spices, is my exprerience.
So, this is my Pinot Noir. But the other wines I have become mouth-aquainted and emotionally experienced with lead me to appreciate this new start into the world of Pinot Noir. I think it's quite a piece of work. - I readily admit that there must be even greater pleasures, more polished gems in the realm of Pinot Noir, and that there are people who have experience with them. But the important fact is that this experience is mine. Now I have the best reason to go on pinotnoiring in a way which could be described as believing in an effort to make discoveries even at the cost of educating mistakes rather than making educated rediscoveries. And that path holds for all wine.
