Sunday, Dec. 4, 2011 - Kalyves.

In Memory of a Hedgehog
During our mid-day walk with Milli we noticed a hawk flying hastily from somewhere just in front of us, and a moment later it landed on an olive tree about 100 meters away. Ofcourse we admired the hawk, and were glad of such an intimate encounter.

After a short walk ahead we found out from what business our approaching had made the hawk to flee.

In the middle of the road we found a recently killed hedgehog lying in a pool of its still fresh blood. The hedgehog was quite unharmed but for the wounds on the left side of its neck. They showed clearly that a bird of pray had killed the hedgehog. Nature's laws seem sometimes cruel.
Likewise it may have been cruel to the hunting hawk, because it seems neither to have been able carry the spiked pray away, nor been able to start eating it because of people walking and cars driving almost continiously on the site.

R.I.P.

The weather aftercast for today and the previous night in Kalyves:
A nicely warm day with mostly clear skies. No wind to speak of. Afternoon high temperature +20.8°C in the shade, much warmer in the sunshine. A T-shirt day in the sun on the veranda and on our walk. Last night's low +7.2°C, partly also because some white clouds gathered before night-fall.
